Born in London to actor Will Knightley and Sharman Macdonald, Knightley obtained an agent at age six and initially performed in commercials and TV films. There was a brief role as Sabe in the space-opera Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999). Her breakthrough came in the role of a teenage football player in the sports documentary Bend It Like Beckham (2002) which went on to achieve worldwide fame as Elizabeth Swann in the swashbuckler fantasy series Pirates of the Caribbean, beginning in 2003.
